Consider how much of the packing you want to handle yourself.

You may decide to pack everything on your own, have professional movers pack your entire home, or use partial packing for specific rooms and difficult-to-pack belongings.

Think About Storage Early

Your pickup and delivery dates may not line up perfectly. You might also be downsizing, renovating, or moving into temporary housing.

4 – 6 Weeks Before Your Move

Begin Packing Things You Don’t Use Every Day

If you’re packing yourself, start with belongings you can comfortably live without for the next several weeks. Seasonal clothing, books, decorations, collectibles, extra linens, and items from infrequently used rooms are good places to begin.

Clearly label each carton with its contents and the room where it belongs. A consistent labeling system can make unloading and unpacking much easier.

Gather Important Records

Some documents are much easier to obtain before you leave your current community.

Depending on your situation, this could include medical and dental records, veterinary records, school information, financial documents, insurance information, and other records you’ll need after moving.

Keep important personal documents with you rather than packing them with household goods.

Plan for Children and Pets

If you’re moving with children, determine what school, childcare, or other arrangements need to be made at your destination.

For pets, update identification information and make arrangements for transportation. If you’re moving a long distance, consider what food, medications, carriers, leashes, and other supplies you’ll need while traveling.

Make Your Travel Plans

For a long-distance or interstate move, your household goods and your family may travel on different schedules.

Plan transportation, overnight accommodations, temporary housing, and anything you’ll need before your household goods arrive. Avoid packing items you’ll need while traveling or immediately after arrival.

2 – 4 Weeks Before Your Move

Submit Your Change of Address

Arrange for your mail to follow you to your new home and begin updating your address with organizations that communicate with you regularly.

In addition to submitting a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service, consider banks and credit cards, insurance companies, employers, subscription services, healthcare providers, schools, and other organizations that maintain your address.

Arrange Utilities and Home Services

Contact utility and service providers for both homes.

Schedule the appropriate end date for services at your current residence and arrange for necessary services to begin at your new home. Depending on where you’re moving, this may include electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, trash collection, internet, and other household services.

Try to avoid having essential utilities disconnected before you’ve completely moved out.

Continue Packing Room by Room

At this point, packing should become more systematic.

Work through the home one room at a time and leave out only the belongings you’ll need during the final weeks. Pay particular attention to areas that are easy to overlook, including closets, cabinets, basements, garages, sheds, and attics.

Make a Plan for Items That Should Stay With You

Certain belongings should travel with you instead of being packed with the rest of your household shipment.

Set aside important documents, medications, keys, wallets, phones, chargers, basic toiletries, a change of clothes, children’s essentials, pet supplies, and other items you’ll need immediate access to.

One Week Before Your Move

Confirm Your Moving Details

Review the final schedule and important details with your relocation consultant.

Make sure your moving team has accurate addresses, phone numbers, access information, and any special instructions for the origin and destination.

If you’re moving into or out of a building with elevators, loading docks, restricted parking, or scheduled move-in times, confirm those arrangements as well.

Finish Most of Your Packing

Try to have the majority of your packing completed before the final day.

Leave out only what you’ll need during the last few days in your current home and your first few days at the new one.

Prepare an Essentials Bag or Box

Think about what you’d want if you arrived at your new home tonight but the rest of your belongings weren’t immediately available.

Pack those necessities separately. Clothing, toiletries, medications, device chargers, basic kitchen items, children’s supplies, pet necessities, and important paperwork are common examples.

Walk Through the House

Check every room and storage area for things that may have been overlooked.

Don’t forget kitchen cabinets, bathroom drawers, closets, the basement, attic, garage, outdoor storage, and anything attached to or stored around the property.

Moving Day

Keep your phone available so your moving team can reach you if necessary, and keep documents, medications, valuables, keys, and your essentials with you.

Before leaving the property, complete one final walkthrough. Open cabinets and closets, check storage areas, and make sure nothing that is supposed to move has been left behind.

At the destination, be available to help direct where belongings should go. Having rooms clearly identified can make the delivery process easier, particularly if your cartons were labeled by room when they were packed.

Moving to Cleveland? Take Care of These Ohio Tasks

If you’re moving to Greater Cleveland from another state, unpacking isn’t the only thing on your post-move checklist. Establishing an Ohio residence comes with several administrative tasks.

Review the Ohio BMV information for new residents.

Transfer Your Driver License

Ohio considers you a resident when you take actions such as accepting employment, signing a lease, purchasing a home, or enrolling children in school. New residents are responsible for transferring an out-of-state driver license or ID card to Ohio within 30 days of establishing residency.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles requires appropriate documentation establishing identity and Ohio residency. Requirements differ depending on the credential you’re obtaining, so check the current documentation requirements before visiting a Deputy Registrar location.

Apply for an Ohio Driver’s License.

Transfer Your Vehicle Title and Registration

If you’re bringing a vehicle from another state, you’ll also need to transfer its title and registration.

Ohio requires an out-of-state title to be transferred to an Ohio title before the vehicle can be registered. Title transfers are handled through a County Clerk of Courts Title Office, while registration is handled through an Ohio BMV Deputy Registrar.

New Ohio residents are responsible for transferring their vehicle title and registration within 30 days of establishing residency.

Transfer an Out-of-State Title to Ohio.

Check Whether Your Vehicle Requires an E-Check

Vehicle-emissions requirements can vary by county. If your new Cleveland-area address is in a county that requires an E-Check, an appropriate certificate may be required when registering an eligible vehicle.

Check the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency E-Check requirements for your specific vehicle and county before registering it.

Update Your Address Everywhere Else

Mail forwarding is helpful, but it doesn’t replace updating your address directly with the organizations that need it.

After settling into your Cleveland-area home, make sure your new address is reflected on important accounts and records, including banking, insurance, employment, healthcare, subscriptions, and other financial or household accounts. If you haven’t already submitted a change of address, you can also update your address with the U.S. Postal Service so eligible mail can be forwarded to your new home.

After You Arrive at Your New Home

Start With the Rooms You Need First

You don’t have to unpack the entire house immediately.

Start with the spaces that will make the home functional, such as the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and main living area. Other rooms, decorations, and less frequently used belongings can wait until you’ve taken care of the essentials.

Planning a Long-Distance or Interstate Move?

A move across the country requires some additional planning compared with a move across town.

Pay particular attention to what you’ll keep with you during travel, where you’ll stay along the way, when you’ll arrive at your destination, and what you’ll need before your household goods are delivered.

If the destination will not be ready when your belongings are picked up, temporary storage may also need to become part of the moving plan.
