International Update

New EIN requirements

For some time now all U.S. Citizen exporting household goods and personal effects out of the USA have been required to submit their social security numbers on the Letter of Acceptance (LOA).

On September 4th 2009 the Foreign Trade Division of the U.S. Census Bureau changed that requirement. The new regulation requires all US Citizens to obtain an Employee Identification Number (EIN) and include that number on the LOA.

The EIN number will be required on all ocean and air exports to international destinations. The regulation does not apply on exports to Alaska, Hawaii or trucked shipments to Canada or Mexico. However the regulation does apply to all exports and imports into Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Guam.

The EIN can be obtained on line through the IRS website. Your International Move Management Center in Minnesota has a complete on-line letter of instruction which you can print or e-mail to a prospective client. The EIN application process takes about 10 minutes there are step-by-step instructions within the letter of instruction. Historically EIN’s have been issued to business or self employed individuals.  For this reason throughout the application process personal effects shippers are referred to as a “Sole Proprietorship”.

The reason why this information is needed is contained in the rules governing trade, commerce, and the protection of personal information.

All non-ground exports leaving the US, clear through an abbreviated clearance with US Customs and Border Protection. This program is administered by the US Department of Commerce through their Automated Export System (AES). When we prepare the Shippers Export Declaration (SED) one of the requirements for US Citizens has been a social security number when exporting household goods or personal effects to international destinations. The EIN replaces the need for a SSN and provides a higher level of security for personal information.

Shipments will not be allowed to depart the United States until an EIN has been submitted with the Electronic Export Information.  Failure to obtain and submit Employee Identification Numbers can result in additional charges for storage, detention, demurrage, shifting etc.

New Letters of Acceptance have been published and are available on the Berger Intranet.

Government Update

Berger recently completed the approval process for an increase to its GSA scope of authority for both domestic and international household goods.  For domestic moves tendered under Berger’s SCAC code BTFA, we previously held 135 traffic lanes; that has been increased to 242 lanes.

This increase will result in price improvements in those additional lanes.
The increase in our international scope will open the door for increased booking opportunities--BTFA’s approved countries went from 22 to 61, allowing Berger to submit rates to/from those countries and provide increased service.

In May of this year Berger began forwarding its own GSA international shipments in traffic lanes within our approved GSA scope.  Clients booking under this new service include Department of State, Fish & Wildlife and National Park Services.  This has been an exciting time for the Berger team; with our increased traffic lanes and the gradual ramp-up in DOS service, this program is expected to expand considerably in 2010.  We would like to thank all of the Berger offices for their support and participation in this important segment of business.

Anyone with questions regarding this increased scope of authority, please feel free to contact Rita Montilla at 12-2417 or email her at ritam@bergerms.com

A Century Of Service

This coming year is Berger’s 100th year in the moving business.  We all can feel a sense of pride to know that our company has been serving families and clients for a century now.  The fact that Berger has been owned and operated by only two families during its first one hundred years is unusual in today’s business world.  Carl Berger with a horse and buggy founded the company in 1910 and it was operated by the Berger family until it was sold to the RD Dircks in the 1940’s.   During the 70’s through today the business has been lead by Bill Dircks Sr and Bill Dircks Jr., and has grown to 17 offices nationwide.    Watch for the 100 year seal on Berger letterhead, envelopes, business cards and miscellaneous marketing materials.  Also, watch for various news releases and upcoming events throughout this next year.

New Cultural Changes Pave Way For Improved Berger & Logix

In the last few weeks the compliance group has been putting together an action plan on how Berger and Logix will maintain a satisfactory rating.  Berger and Logix are moving forward and taking the necessary steps to maintain a satisfactory rating.  The first step in this process is to inform all of our employees and contractors of any problems and how the company plans to resolve them correctly. Gone are the days of lack of communication between departments, terminals and Berger & Logix drivers.  Berger and Logix can maintain their satisfactory rating by effectively communicating internally with all departments and terminals along with externally communicating with each and every one of our drivers. Director of Safety Diane Anderson says, "With training and increased communication we can minimize any compliance violations." While most companies may be afraid of change, Berger and Logix welcome the challenge and are excited to enter into this new chapter as both continue to evolve and grow.

These new cultural changes within the Berger and Logix family will only strengthen and solidify our commitment of offering high quality moves within our industry. "In this tough economic environment and into the future, compliance will be a great differentiator for Berger.  Delivering exceptional service while flawlessly executing our processes will assure we maintain our leadership position within the industry," says Mike Schneider.  We ask that each and every one of you spend a little time talking with another co-worker or driver about these new cultural changes within Berger and Logix. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and suggest any ideas you may have on how to continue this internal cultural change.   As with any corporation, there will be road blocks along the way, however Berger & Logix have found that their road to success is in fact paved by compliance.

How You Can Make A Difference

With the down housing market that the entire country has been experiencing the past few years, every move opportunity is an important  one.  You may ask yourself, what can I do to help?  There are a number of very simple things that all of us can do.  Here are just a few… 1) When you see a house for sale in your neighborhood ask your neighbor if they have considered using a moving company when it comes time to move.  Let them know you work for Berger and that you can get them in contact with a rep who can come out and give them an estimate. 2) A lot of us are involved with various community and social groups , churches and clubs.  Let everyone know that you work for a moving company and that if they ever need moving services you can help them arrange for an estimate.  3) Keep your eyes and ears open to any opportunity that might benefit the company.  Take a few minutes to educate yourself on all the types of moving services Berger offers, because you never know when you may hear of  a local company or family in your neighborhood moving to a new location.  “Opportunity”, as defined in Webster’s dictionary – “a favorable juncture of circumstances”.  Anyone wanting to learn more about Berger services, please feel to email MarketingTeam@bergerallied.com

Berger Saint Paul Donates Time To Help Local Youth

On Saturday, October 10, at the Xcel Energy Center (home of the Minnesota Wild), over 750 hockey players and their families were the recipients of more than 2,000 pieces of hockey gear that was collected during the Used Hockey Equipment Drive. There was enough equipment to fill 1 1/2 Berger semi-trailers and nearly every item was distributed. The drive went a long way to providing gear to those who want to stay in hockey or begin to play for the first time. The Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Hockey and Let's Play Hockey would like to thank Berger for the donating the trailers and time to drop off and pick up the equipment for this year’s drive.  "I cannot express my gratitude enough to the entire hockey community who came forward to make this an outstanding success. We are already planning to have a drive again next season," said Let's Play Hockey publisher Doug Johnson.  Berger was awarded a “thank you” plaque during intermission at the Nashville vs Minnesota game on October 28th at the Excel Energy Center.

Getting Technical With Berger's IT Department

Beware of Census-Related Scams

Excerpted from the Better Business Bureau website at http://tucson.bbb.org/article/dont-fall-for-a-census-related-scam-10176

The U.S. Census is an important process conducted every ten years. Over the next 18 months, 1.4 million U.S. Census workers will survey the population of the United States to gather important demographic information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, ethnic origin, birth date, marital status, employment status and other relevant data.

U.S. citizens are required by law to respond to the U.S. Census Bureau's requests for information. Census data will be used to allocate more than $300 billion in federal funds every year and is used to determine a State's number of Congressional representatives.

During the U.S. Census, you may receive a letter, telephone call or visit from a U.S. Census worker who will inquire about people living in your household. Unfortunately, you may also be contacted by scammers impersonating Census workers so they can get access to your banking and financial information.

Law enforcement officials in several states have issued warnings that scammers are already posing as Census employees, asking for donations and Social Security numbers.

The big question is: How do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist?
BBB has this advice:

  • U.S. Census workers will have identification, a handheld device and a confidentiality notice. If a Census worker knocks on your door, ask to see their identification before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home.
  • U.S. Census workers will not ask you for your social security number or your banking and financial information. Do not ever give your social security number, credit card or banking information to anyone who contacts you, even if they say it is for the Census.
  • U.S. Census workers will not ask you for money or tell you that you owe money. They will not harass you or intimidate you into paying money or giving them your social security number.
  • U.S. Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail or in person at home. However, they will not contact you by email, so be vigilant about email scams impersonating the Census.

If you're unsure whether or not you're the target of a Census-related scam, contact your local BBB.

Try the Knowledge Base. You can get to it from the Intranet by choosing IT Knowledge Base from the Help section of the main menu.

Office & Industrial Update

The  Office and Industrial group has been very busy this summer pursuing new business ventures and building strong relationships with current partners.  The Office and Industrial team has also been very busy with working on updating and creating new sales material pieces as well as working diligently with the Marketing Department to create an interactive O & I website for Berger.  Some new sales material includes “Emergency Relocation Services”, “Hospital and Medical Equipment Relocation”, Moving Services for Renovation & Construction”, “Relocation Solutions for Banks”, and “Relocation Solutions for Libraries”.

When completed, the new sales material will join the rest of the O&I Sales material that is currently available for use on the Berger Intranet O&I Page. All material will be in PDF form and is downloadable to any Berger personnel needing access to it.  The O & I website is scheduled to be up and running within the next couple of months and will look much like the Berger Distribution website.

Congratulations on a Job Well Done!

National Accounts – Eric Reed

Many thanks to you and your team for a great move! The team was awesome – friendly, professional and efficient! We would appreciate if you would pass along our thanks to all for their efforts. Berger is the best!

Office & Industrial – Jeff Johnson

I just wanted to express our gratitude for the work that Jeff does for BAE Systems. The sheer size of our facility and the amount of furniture and equipment we have here can make things challenging, and Jeff does a great job getting things done well and in a timely manner.

Berger Charlotte

Well... over 3 weeks have passed since we made the move from Charlotte, NC to Kansas.  Although a move such as this can be very unsettling Berger Transfer & Storage helped to make this a smoother transition.

I was so impressed with the workers who packed our belongings. Everything was wrapped and packed with care.  I don't believe there were any damaged articles.  They were also very polite and respectful which I found refreshing and helped me to be at ease as my husband was already in Wichita and I was alone.

The movers showed me the same respect and care for our belongings as they loaded the truck in Charlotte and unloaded the truck in Derby, Kansas.  It was a special challenge for them as the rain came down for the morning in Charlotte.  But they made every precaution to protect our belongings.  The movers also had a challenge in Derby as there were 3 floors to our new home and boxes went to different rooms the noted on the boxes.  But everyone was patient and kind to be sure the boxes found their new "home."

If and when we move in the future Berger Transfer & Storage will be the first phone call we make and I will take every opportunity to recommend your company to others.

Thank you so much.

Berger Columbus – Mark Gilmore

I had an awesome experience with my move.  Driver (Mark Gilmore) was phenomenal; not only as a worker but a great person.  I thought I would let you know of your success.  Nice work!

Logix – John Dewitt, Ray Lassi, Eric Merten

On behalf of the Unisys Western Hemisphere Travel Initiate Team (WHTI), please accept my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the outstanding contributions your team has made as we have just completed the first phase of the WHTI installations. Recently I had the opportunity to attend the annual WHTI Workshop for the District Field Officers held by the Office of Field Operations (OFO) within Customs and Border Protection (CBP). During that workshop, Assistant Commissioner Winkowski, reported that the WHTI deployment was the most successful program implementation he had witnessed in his career. We are all very proud of this accomplishment and want to make sure we acknowledge those that helped lead the way. Your team's contribution was particularly important to the success our team is enjoying today.

The logistics support team, under the direction of Eric Merten, provided coordination, scheduling and delivery of LPR and RFID lane equipment at 62 land border Ports of Entry during this successful first phase of the WHTI program. Beginning with the early phase of the installation accelerated Mr. Lassi adapted to the many change requests and delivery schedule changes which were instrumental in sustaining our progress as we transitioned from the Southern Border crossings to the large number of Northern Border sites required to be completed prior to the congressionally mandated completion of 1 June 2009.

CBP has reported to Congress that our team has met their mandate. The installed ports are ready to process travelers more safely and efficiently than ever before. This is a significant milestone and I would like to recognize the accomplishments of Ray Lassi on the WHTI program. Mr. Lass represented himself, Berger Transport Solutions and our program with professionalism and brough a "can do" attitude that contributed to the team's success. We look forward to continued work with Berger Transportation Solutions and your team.

Berger Atlanta – Butch, Lucio, Wilbur, and Martin

On June 17 and 18, we moved from Cumming, GA, to McCormick, SC. Our experience with both loading and unloading was exceptional. We have moved a number of times in our life and found this to be the best. The crew consisting of Frank (Butch) Riley and his movers, Lucio, Wilbur, and Martin, were courteous, competent, conscientious, careful, and cooperative. Moving is a stressful time, and we were blessed to work with these folks who were so responsive to our needs. I continue to offer praise for the good job that they did. I have found nothing broken or damaged. We appreciate and will recommend Berger Transfer and Storage to friends and acquaintances.

Berger Charlotte & Berger Louisville – Margaret Panther & Mike Snodgrass

To Berger Allied-

I wanted to let you know how satisfied we were with the services of your company.  Margaret, our representative kept in touch with us and kept us informed every step to let us know how things were going what time lines there were and when our silverware was left behind- she arranged to have it shipped to us.

Mike Snodgrass your driver was exceptional.  We disposed of a desk and only later realized that personal papers were inside.  Mike got in touch us and said he had the packer empty the drawers and then saw that we had a bunch of stickies with passwords on them on one of the doors so he had the door taken off.  So what could have been a potential nightmare for us, was averted by a very conscientious driver.  He's awesome!

Your drivers Mike and Mike were awesome.  Your helpers on both ends were energetic and professional and didn't mind working around my kids and dogs.  It was a long move and they had to move a lot of boxes and I appreciate their hard work and dedication.  Please thank all of them and know what gems you have in your employees.  In this time of cutting back,  I wouldn't let these hard workers that represent your company ever leave.

Berger Columbus – Cole, Lori, Jason, Antonio, Allen & Jaime

The pack-out went EXTREMELY WELL yesterday!  The Berger team from Columbus was EXCELLENT!  I was very impressed with their professionalism and skill.  The team worked very well together and treated our belongings with the utmost care and respect.  Cole, Lori, Jason, Antonio, Allen and Jaime deserve accolades and recognition for their work at our house yesterday.  Thanks for making this a good experience for us.

Berger Cleveland – Gill Kruger

Both moves went very well. Your guys were great - they did both moves much faster than quoted.  I think the total was 5.5 hours on Wednesday and 4.75 on Thursday.  We were very happy with the job they did - please pass that on to their supervisors.
Note they did not need to build a box for the Plasma TV, so we should not see the $75 charge.  We'll have that done for the long distance move.

Thank you for all your help - you have been very flexible with all the changes we made along the way.  Everyone we have dealt with at Berger has been extremely helpful and professional.

Berger Los Angeles – Maerek Wojs

I just wanted to pass along my thanks to you and your company, especially the two great guys who help us with our move from Southern Calif. to Northern Calif. They help make the process go so much easier and helped to ease my wife’s nerves. I have just a quick question: Will I be receiving a completed detailed bill, so I can then get my reimbursement from my company?
Please let me know.

Again, let me say THANK YOU to all.

Berger Dallas – Rusty Fuller

On behalf of the Allied Agents Association the AAA Quality Committee and Allied Van Lines we would like to thank you for your continued support of our Better Together initiative. You have been selected for this recognition by a couple of your peers {Jolene Devlin from Citizens and Rick Connerley in Operations} specifically for really helping them both out with a very difficult customer loading situation involving registration 347659. You worked a minor miracle in pulling", couple guys of jobs to help in the loading of this shipment. Your help really made A differencel
As a small token of our appreciation we have enclosed a bunch of neat stuff. What we encourage you to do is to take a few items for yourself and hand out the remaining items to those people around you that have helped you along the way,
paying it forward so to speak. You will probably notice too that most of the items have the words "Better Toqether" on them. Since we truly do rely so heavily on each other to be successful the better we are all able to work together, the more successful we will become... Thanks again for your continued support and have fun sharing.

Berger Cincinnati – Mark Bayne

Wanted to let you know that the move went very well.  Although we still have some boxes to go through, so far everything arrived intact and we are not aware of anything that was lost.  The jewelry drawer that was missing turned up in a suitcase.  We genuinely appreciate the care your crew took with our belongings, and how conscientious they were in terms of move details.

One issue that has come up...we have not been able to track down the keys left for the driver to the Philadelphia Apt.  Not sure where he might have left them, or if they accidentally went home with him.  Let me know what you find out.

Thank you again.  I will eagerly recommend your services to others and plan to write an excellent review online.

Berger Chicago

I happened to be carrying a heavy safe across my front yard on a dolly today.  It is very unusual to see heavy trucks on our residential street.  So I was startled to see one of your moving vans skillfully negotiating a corner.  As the full length of the trailer revealed itself I could hardly believe my eyes.  I stood there in admiration for a moment and the driver and I looked at each other smiling as he passed by. I continued my project.  Suddenly the driver or his assistant came jogging up the walk and offered to help me!

He had just finished moving someone from Tennessee.  He himself is from Chicago.  That’s all I learned about him in our brief encounter.  Thanks to him the safe is now in our basement and I have neither broken bones nor slipped disk.  I was completely amazed and thankful for his generosity and bright spirit.

Congratulations on this outstanding person working for your company! And my sincere thanks to him!

Berger St. Paul Don Anderson & Paul Luxem

Good afternoon,

A huge thank you to two of your drivers. My one and a half year old son is enamored with trucks. When we saw the Minnesota Gophers moving truck parked outside of the Northwester Wildcat's stadium this morning, we had to go see it. The two Allied drivers were so nice and friendly. They took the time to show us around the truck, and they even gave my son a mini Allied semi-truck; he loves it so much he has been holding it ever since! He wouldn't even let it out of his clutch for his nap. These two gentlemen should be commended for their thoughtfulness and friendliness. What wonderful spokesmen for Berger Allied!

Sincere thanks.

Berger Cincinnati – Bill Cuzzort

Dear Bill:

Just a quick note to thank you for your help with my daughter's recent move. Your assistance made it possible for the move to take place the way she had planned (and limited the stress in the Grass household!!).

I appreciate what you have done for me on a personal basis, as well as the great job you have done for us on a corporate basis over the years.

To whom it may concern,

My husband and I would like to share that we are so pleased with the service of Berger Allied. We have since referred the company to friends who will relocate soon. We want to recognize the professionalism and care with which Mr. Aurelio Robles and Eligio Spindola moved our precious cargo. Monique was also wonderful in handling our move as a liason of sorts. Thank you very much!

Berger Louisville Bob Arnold; Cindy Bailey; Don Hubbuch

Dear Mr. Tharpe:

Your office moved us from Louisville to Rock Hill on July 7, 2009. We wanted to take a moment to thank everyone involved in our move for the wonderful job they did. All of our belongings came through the move just fine.

Bob Arnold land Cindy Bailey made sure everything went smoothly and kept us informed of what to expect during the move. The two ladies who packed us were very careful with our belongings. They made sure that items we were worried about were packed with extra care. They were great to work with. The loaders in Louisville, and the unloader in Rock Hill all did a great job. We also want to say a special thank you to our driver, Don. We felt he did an outstanding job. He was pleasant, hard working, and didn't leave until he was sure we were completely satisfied with our move.

You have an outstanding group of people working for you. Everyone was hard working, showed concern for our belongings and made sure we were comfortable with eveyr aspect of our move. Please thank them all for us.

Berger Houston Stephanie Thompson

Mr. King:  I want to provide feedback about the excellent service I have received from Ms. Stephanie Thompson.

Ms. Thompson has been assisting me for the past few weeks for my move from Houston, TX to Lexington, KY.  She has been very patient in making and changing scheduling for my family's move.  I had to re-schedule my packing and loading date a couple of times and she worked with me to re-schedule those to fit my needs.  She has also helped me make alternative arrangements for temporary storage of our household items here in Lexington, KY.  Finally, she is continuing to work with me until our househild items reach its final destination in our home in Lexington.

Her patience and assistance has been a tremendous help in making our move as smooth as possible.  In addition, I think that she is a very dedicated employee who truly cares about what she does.

I want to express my thanks to Ms. Thompson and let you know that her good work is much appreciated and does make a big difference to your customers.
